Whole Foods Film Festival this whole month of April

Whole Foods Market presents the Do Something Reel™ Film Festival, a collection of six provocative, character-driven films focused on passionate people making a world of difference.

From the Coal River Valley of West Virginia to the inner city of Detroit, from vanishing bee populations to the evolution of the National School Lunch Program, from farmers and active everyday citizens to doctors and scientists, the Do Something Reel line-up provides a moving, eye-opening look at how the choices we make can have a huge impact on our bodies, our economy, and our environment. 'A Chemical Reaction' screening in Shorewood Tues Sept 28th

This is a fantastic documentary on the lawn care pesticides that are killing our planet, pets and people. This DVD is not available on Netflix yet so the only way you can see it is at a screening such as this one. Don't miss it!

an  AWARD WINNING ENVIRONMENTAL DOCUMENTARY

THAT QUESTIONS USE OF LANDSCAPE PESTICIDES

A Chemical Reaction explores how the elimination of lawn pesticides transformed one community in Canada, and how their actions impacted the chemical lawn care industry in North America.  Centered on the small town of Hudson, Quebec which was the first municipality in North America to ban common lawn and garden pesticides, the 75-minute film explores a landmark case decided in the Canadian Supreme Court in 2001. After the Court’s 9-0 verdict against the billion-dollar lawn care giant then known as ChemLawn, most Canadian provinces followed Hudson’s lead and enacted pesticide bans of their own. 

SHOREWOOD, WI - September 28th, 2010, Shorewood High School Auditorium, on the corner of Oakland Avenue and Capitol Drive, Shorewood 53211.  The movie is free to the public, a $5.00 donation is suggested.  Screening begins at 7 p.m., seating opens at 6:30 p.m. This film is presented by the Healthy Communities Project  in partnership with the Shorewood Conservation Committee and the School District of Shorewood.  

“A Chemical Reaction is a great example of how motivated individuals can create change to improve public health,” said Melanie Ariens, of Healthy Communities Project.  

Directed by Brett Plymale, A Chemical Reaction is described as “rousing” and was awarded four out of five stars by the film critics of the Montreal Gazette prior to its World Premiere in the fall of 2009. Since then the film has been earning awards and accolades at various film festivals, university screenings and other public venues. “Having visited Wisconsin several times in the past few years, I think the state is one of the few in the U.S. that could really be ready to embrace pesticide reform legislation,” said Paul Tukey, narrator of the film and founder of SafeLawns.org. - a non-profit organization dedicated to reduction in the use of lawn and garden pesticides and synthetic chemical fertilizers. It has produced a series of high-profile campaigns since its inception in 2006.

About The Film Series: The School District of Shorewood is pleased to announce the debut of a new cinematic series during the 2010-2011 school year. The district is partnering with several organizations throughout the year to present films and related presentations that relate to an organization’s focus.  A Chemical Reaction is the first film presented in this series, by the Healthy Communities Project of Milwaukee in partnership with the Shorewood Conservation Committee and the School District of Shorewood.  

The series is scheduled for the following Tuesdays: November 2, February 1, March 8 and May 17.  More details will be posted on the district’s website at  http://www.shorewoodschools.org/.

'No Impact Man' movie at the Bay View EcoVillage

I went to a viewing of No Impact Man last night at the Bay View EcoVillage. What a great place and documentary! The movie is about Colin Beavan who decides to see what would happen if his family (wife and young daughter) lived for 1 year making no impact on the earth. It was interesting to see how things are so connected that we just take for granted. No electricity means no fridge, which means no milk (he comes up with a solution). No electricity also means no washing machine (they find out the tub and your feet works fine!) It was great to see how you can come up with eco friendly alternatives to our societal destructive ways. Not that 'Family Cloth' would work for all families (what you use instead of toilet paper. Fabric wipes you wash just like cloth diapers). Being No Impact would be very, very challenging for almost all of us but even if you do a few of the eco concious actions it will make a big impact.

A few simple easy eco actions you can do right now:

• Marcal Small Steps  toilet paper. http://www.marcalsmallsteps.com It is 100% recycled ..I know you are thinking 'ouch, scratchy ol' recycled toilet paper' But is it not scratchy! It is not uber soft but it is much better then recycled toilet paper from back in the day. They have been around since 1950 and have saved million and million trees. Pick N Save carries it and they have it on sale usually every other month. In the Sunday paper coupons, you can find a $1.00 off coupon. And if you go to Pick N Save on Wednesday, it is double coupon day!
• We love our To-Go Ware utensil set. http://to-goware.com It is a bamboo set of a knife, spoon, fork and chopsticks in a pouch (We add a straw too). We keep it in the diaper bag so we always have it when we go out to eat. Then we don't need to use plastic ware!

We are going to try the No Impact Experiment for this week. I know it will be hard but everything we do will help the Earth.    ***We pledge and guarantee to not eat out for this No Impact week.***  This is a big thing for us. We eat out way more then we should.
 

Now, I must tell you about the Bay View EcoVillage. What a great set-up. Mark, who lives there and hosted the movie party, explained how the village works. There are 7 adults and 3 children that live in 2 side by side duplexes. They all share 1 car, they cook and eat meals together, have 1 TV in a room large enough to hold all of them and more and they have a massive vegetable garden. They have their own village. It was awesome to see. Thanks Mark and Lauren for hosting this event!!!

Eco-Friendly Baby Shower Invite

Here is the invite I sent out for my baby shower. Please feel free to use any or all of it that you would like. I was very happy that I didn't get any negative responds to this very different request. Actually, several guests told me that they had lots of fun finding cool gifts at the resale stores. I also included a list of the local children's resale stores.

Dear Friends and Family,


You have not met me yet but I am baby Boy D*** and I will be arriving very soon. I am so excited to join my mommy and daddy’s life and be the child they have always wanted.

You may know that my daddy is going to school for Environmental and Pollution Control Technologies. He and mommy are really trying to make a better and healthier world for me and everyone else too. I really want to start off my life with a minimal impact on the Earth and a healthy non-toxic environment for me. That is why I want to have an Eco-Friendly Baby Shower. I know that there are so many super cute baby items brand new in the store that you would love to buy for me but most of them are not healthy for me or the environment.

Ways to be Eco-Friendly could include:
• Gently used items from resale and thrift stores. This saves you lots of money, keeps these items and all the new packaging out of the landfills, have less toxins and supports a local business owner! Mommy knows you can find great baby items and toys here because she works at one.
• Wooden toys. Plastic toys and items have lots of yucky chemicals in them.
• Natural and Organic toys, clothes and blankets and Cloth Diapers Not your grandma’s cloth diapers anymore – Check out our registry at JilliansDrawers.com. Use ******@yahoo.com to search for our registry.
• Handmade gifts. Gifts made with love are always better than store bought.
• Wrapping the gift in a recycled way – a blanket, a cloth diaper, the comics, reusable fabric bag, decorative box that can be reused as storage… be creative!
• Homemade frozen meals for mommy and daddy to eat when they are too tired to cook.
• Offering to babysit me. I would love to hang out with you!
• Gift cards to Whole Foods- to buy organic foods for when mommy makes my baby food, The Outpost, any ‘Green’ store and resale stores.

In lieu of a baby shower card, please find a used children’s book and sign it. This will be a great way to start my own library. A wonderful place to find awesome children’s books (and books for you) is at Half-Price Books.

I know this is different than any baby shower you have been to but it is important to me, mommy and daddy. This will give me the best start at my life and also help the Earth! We are registered at Target on-line for a few new items. Thank you for being a part of my life (and mommy’s and daddy’s). I’ll see you soon! Love ya!
